On the Brink of Collapse: Celebrities and Suicide
News broke June 5 that reality TV personality Tila Tequila (allegedly) attempted suicide. No one can be quite sure whether she is having legitimate suicidal thoughts or whether the entire thing was just a hoax.
Her alter ego, Jane, supposedly tried to kill her, which resulted in bloody gashes on her arms that soon invaded Twitter and blogs across the nation.
Whether or not Tila truly meant to end her life, the troubling aspect is the harm she did to her body in an effort to get noticed. She is after all a self-made celebrity, and likely knew how to get herself in the spotlight. For those who haven’t nicknamed themselves after a type of liquor, suicide attempts can often be a cry for help: a way to reach out in the only way one can think of. But it’s not a good plan!
Tila Tequila is not the first celebrity to try taking her own life. There are some surprising celebs who have attempted suicide before getting help and turning their lives around. In 2007 the world was shocked with Owen Wilson was hospitalized for trying to end his life. Even celebrities, glamorous as their lives may seem, have internal pain that is hard to talk about. The good news? Other people have experienced what you may be going through, and even if they haven’t, can help you find the kind of support you need.
What are your thoughts on Tila’s, Owen’s and other celebrities’ suicide attempts? Are they a cry for help, attention or both?
